GREENSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECOGNIZES
VSBA BULLYING PREVENTION MONTH
The Virginia School Board Association(VSBA) declared the month of January as Bullying Prevention Month. Greensville Elementary promoted this month by promoting activities to help put an end to bullying. A school wide assembly was held on January 31, 2012. The students viewed a video that introduced the concept of bully and victim. Other objectives included: to identify the feelings one might have as a victim or a bully, to show that we have a choice in how we react to a bully, to illustrate how a child may become a bully, to suggest ways to avoid being picked on and to show what a bully can do to change.
The music teacher, Mr. James Lundy, worked with Dawson Butler a fourth TAG and presented a bully prevention song during the assembly. Sisters in Motion provided coloring sheets to the students for a coloring contest. One student from each grade level will be selected for a prize. Classroom guidance lessons in grades 2, 3 and 4 included activities on behavior to promote the prevention of bullying. Classroom guidance lessons in grades pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first included activities on positive interactions with peers, such as honesty and building friendships.
Deputy Kevin Hines from the Greensville County Sheriff’s Department discussed bullying with the students. He was well received by teachers and students. He left booklets with the guidance department to use with students and teachers on violence.
